Bernard Vallarino on the Impact of COVID-19

I have been forced to look at my own art practice and make decisions to shift and adapt in order to remain relevant. I have found something fairly surprising, though. I have realized that my work is much more multifaceted than I thought it was and, because of that, I have been able to participate in an array of artistic events in many different platforms. So, even though there has been a lot of change, the experiences from these opportunities have allowed me to realize something new about my work that I can now explore as I continue to grow in my artistic career.

Bernardo Vallarino on What He Hopes to Inspire Through Pedacitos de Paz

Hopefully, in some way, I can inspire some action. Something as simple as to vote can actually help curve the violence in some way. There is a quote by Pope Francis that really reflects the intent of Pedacitos de Paz. He says, “prayers that don’t lead to concrete actions toward our brothers is a fruitless and incomplete prayer.

Bernardo Vallarino on Pedacitos de Paz in Relation to His Other Works

Pedacitos de Paz fits really comfortably with the themes I explore in my art, themes like suffering and social injustice. It also has a lot of the formal elements I tend to gravitate toward, like repetition, plurality, and scale, and, as with the rest of my works, it is intended to engage the audience visually but also morally and philosophically. However, Pedacitos de Paz is a little different because this installation has taught me new ways of approaching my own artistic practice, for example, by having an element of performance and introducing aspects of time. These are things I have not done before but are creating new venues in which I can grow, things that I can explore that will allow me to continue expressing my frustrations with the hypocrisy that I see that exists between the rhetoric of human life and the violent behavior of humanity.

Bernardo Vallarino sobre el impacto del COVID-19

Me he visto obligado a mirar mi propia práctica artística y tomar decisiones para cambiar y adaptarme para seguir siendo relevante. Sin embargo, he encontrado algo bastante sorprendente.
