Join artist Charles Ross in conversation with Nasher Curator Leigh Arnold.

For the last 55 years on a mesa in northern New Mexico, Ross has been creating a monumental, 11-story earthwork and sculpture to observe the stars. An unparalleled feat of art, science, and engineering, Star Axis is constructed in precise alignment with the sun and stars, creating a human-scale experience of the cosmos.

As Ross looks ahead to completing his work on Star Axis this summer, he and Arnold will trace his journey bringing the earthwork to life. They will also explore the broader arc of his artistic practice and longtime exploration of natural light, from his early exhibitions with the renowned Dwan Gallery in the 1960s to more recent projects, including his commissioned installation on view at the Getty Museum through November 2026, and new works Franklin Parrasch Gallery is presenting at this year’s Dallas Art Fair.
