For some artists, this has meant exploring—and challenging—centuries-old techniques, such as bronze casting in works by Willem de Kooning and Pablo Picasso,Medardo Rosso’s use of plaster and wax, or Simone Leigh’s glazed ceramic works. Others have brought industrial processes and materials into their practice. Scott Burton, Jeff Koons, and David Smith each used steel in their sculptures in strikingly individual ways.  

The artworks on view invite us to feel a sense of wonder at the world around us, from Claes Oldenburg’s playful enlargement of a typewriter eraser to Marguerite Humeau’s delicately futuristic vision of nature. Don’t miss the first modern sculpture purchased by Raymond and Patsy—Jean (Hans) Arp’s Torso with Buds—as well as the museum’s recent acquisition of a work by Andrea Zittel, celebrating the collection’s continued growth.
