Waging war seems as inevitable a part human nature as our mortality. The grotesque rituals of war are represented with horrifying honesty in Francisco Goya’s book of etchings Los Desastres de la Guerra(The Disasters of War) and form the foundation of Martin Bresnick’s Caprichos Enfáticos(Emphatic Caprices).

In stark contrast is the Hindu funeral ceremony that inspires James Wood’s Village Burial with Fire, a ritual of the greatest care and beauty that purifies the soul of the deceased and sets it free to mingle with the spirit world.

The Percussion Collective’s Ji Hye Jung, Matt Keown, Ian Rosenbaum, and Sam Seyong Um are joined by pianist and SoundingsArtistic Director Seth Knopp for this performance.
