Nasher Sculpture Center Announces Next Offsite Nasher Public Project: Artist Alicia Eggert, presented in partnership with Trammel Crow Center

Eggert’s steel and neon sculpture to be sited at growing Arts District development, across from the Trammel Crow Center

DALLAS, Texas (November 4, 2021)—The Nasher Sculpture Center announces its next offsite Nasher Public project: Alicia Eggert’s The Time for Becoming, presented in partnership with Trammel Crow Center and sited in an empty lot adjacent to 2000 Ross Avenue, a multi-use development that will include ground floor retail, hotel, and residences. The work will be on view from November 13, 2021 – November 13, 2022.

A steel structure with red neon lettering, Eggert’s work shifts between messages.  “NOW IS ONLY FOR THE TIME BEING” changes to “NOW IS ALWAYS THE TIME FOR BECOMING.” Sited at the busy intersection of Ross and Olive Streets in downtown Dallas, a burgeoning extension of the Dallas Arts District, Eggert’s work heralds the possibilities of new public space, commerce, and civic growth that enrich the urban experience.

The work also continues Eggert’s philosophical exploration of language and time.  Using the language of commercial signage such as neon, steel, plastic, inflatables, and flowers, Eggert poses existential conundrums.  Messages imparted in her works have included “This present moment used to be the unimaginable future” which transforms into “This moment used to be the future,” as well as “All the light you see is from the past,” which changes to “All you see is past.”  Taking inspiration from astrophysics, existential philosophy, and semiotics, these “signs” highlight and question one’s experience of reality from a cosmic perspective.

Eggert’s work builds upon that of artists Bruce Nauman and Jenny Holzer. All employ the material vocabulary of commercial signage to examine the existential truths and the limits of language.  In 1967, Nauman made a circular neon sign that illuminated the words “The true artist helps the world by revealing mystic truths.”  Holzer built upon Nauman’s legacy with her Truisms from the late 1970s and early 1980s, sayings that could be read equally as deep and philosophical or banal and ironic.  Eggert’s musings are truisms of another kind: plain facts that illuminate existential phenomena.
