Dallas, Texas -- The Nasher Sculpture Center announces choreographer, dancer and director Bill T. Jones as the featured guest at the March 20 NasherSalon. Tickets are $45 for adults ($40 for members) and will be available for purchase on-line at NasherSalonSeries.org or by calling 888.695.0888 beginning Sunday, March 2 at 10 am.
The Salon, presented by Museum Tower with media support by The Dallas Morning News, will take place at 8 p.m. in the intimate Nasher Auditorium. Salon ticket holders may purchase a pre-Salon buffet dinner at Nasher Café by Wolfgang Puck for $25 per person by calling 214.242.5144.
The Salon, titled Tar Baby or Caught in Mid-Stream, takes place as Jones prepares for one of the most significant commissions of his career, a work honoring one of this country’s greatest icons. The choreographer will lead a frank discussion about how has coped with the age old concern: how artistic practice and process negotiate inner experience and outer reality, and will be illustrated with video excerpts from two works from the early 90's: Absence and Last Supper at Uncle Tom's Cabin/The Promised Land and a contemporary work: Chapel/Chapter.
The recipient of countless awards including a 2007 Tony Award and 2007 Obie Award, Jones is a powerful force in the modern dance world with a fresh unique style which exudes energy and technical virtuosity. The creator of more than 100 works for the Bill T. Jones/Arnie Zane Dance Company, as well as numerous other companies, his work has been seen in some of the most prestigious venues, in addition to television, theater and print.
Jones began his dance training at the State University of New York at Binghamton (SUNY), studying classical ballet and modern dance. He choreographed and performed worldwide as a soloist and duet company with his late partner, Arnie Zane before forming the Bill T. Jones/Arnie Zane Dance Company in 1982. His work includes Mother of Three Sons, which he conceived, co-directed, and choreographed for the New York City Opera, Houston Grand Opera and Munich Biennale; Lost in the Stars, which he directed for the Boston Lyric Opera, and Dream on Monkey Mountain, which he directed for the Guthrie Theater.
In addition to his Tony and Obie Awards, Jones has also been honored with the 2005 Wexner Prize, the 2005 Samuel H. Scripps American Dance Festival Award for Lifetime Achievement, the 2003 Dorothy and Lillian Gish Prize, as well as a 1994 MacArthur Fellowship. In 2000, The Dance Heritage Coalition named Jones “An Irreplaceable Dance Treasure.”
Jones holds honorary doctorates from the Art Institute of Chicago, Bard College, Columbia College, the Juilliard School, and Swarthmore College. He is the recipient of the SUNY Binghamton Distinguished Alumni Award.
The NasherSalon 2008 Lecture Series takes place every month at the Nasher Sculpture Center and features nationally and internationally acclaimed speakers discussing topics relating to art, theater, dance, movies, and the culinary arts.
About the NasherSalon:
The NasherSalon series began in 2005 as a monthly forum held at the Nasher Sculpture Center to engage in discussions on topics relating to art in its various forms – sculpture, painting, music, and the culinary arts. In 2006, The Dallas Morning News signed on as the Salon’s primary media partner, providing generous media support for publicity of the series, as well as experts from the news staff to share their insider knowledge and lead the conversations. The series, which was titled The Art of Urban Living, examined a range of topics germane to urban life – from entertaining and finding the best wines to the architectural evolvement of Dallas. The 2008 NasherSalon marks the third installment of the series and features the addition of presenting sponsor Museum Tower. Featuring internationally renowned speakers, this year’s series provides an unmatched forum for intimate, intellectual conversation amidst the finest collection of modern and contemporary sculpture in the world.
