3/2/2005 12:00:00 AM
Dallas, Texas, March 2, 2005?The Nasher Sculpture Center will introduce a spring season abounding with new sculpture, programming and activities for museum attendees of all ages. Center guests, locally and from around the world, are sure to be culturally stimulated by the new additions to the calendar and the museum. The spring celebration launches on March 23 with the installation of a new sculpture by artist Jonathan Borofsky, titled Walking to the Sky.
This monumental sculpture features several figures walking up a 100-foot stainless steel pole into the sky. On loan from the artist, this new work was first shown in New York City at Rockefeller Center in September 2004. The Nasher Sculpture Center is the only other venue to show the work to date.
?We feel very fortunate to host Walking to the Sky,? said Raymond Nasher, Founder and Chairman of the Center. ?It is an exceptional work of art and will be a sculpture that everyone visiting the Center can relate to and appreciate.?
The Center will also present David Smith: Drawing and Sculpting from April 16 through July 17, 2005. Co-organized by the Nasher Sculpture Center and the David Smith Estate, the exhibition features approximately fifteen seminal sculptures and seventy major drawings and paintings, many of which have never before been publicly displayed. The focus of the exhibition is on Smith?s history and talents as a draftsman and explores the fascinating interaction between his drawings, paintings, and sculptures.
In addition to both installations, the Center will debut several exciting new programs targeted at attracting a wide-ranging audience as part of its ?Be ?N the Center? spring lineup.
Together in the Center will take place the first Saturday of the month, April through June. Visitors will enjoy free admission from 10 a.m. ? noon, children?s art activities, yoga in the garden, artist demonstrations, docent-led tours, musical entertainment and dining options.
Saturday Night in the City will be held each Saturday evening throughout the spring beginning April 2. The chicly transformed Caf?ansion will offer cocktails and a special tasting menu that celebrates a different artist each week. Guests will enjoy live music, a gallery talk, sunset viewings of the James Turrell skyspace, Tending, (Blue), and moonlight strolls in the garden.
Thursday Night in the Center will debut April 14 and offer patrons free admission from 5 p.m. ? 11 p.m., live music, cocktails, sunset viewings of James Turrell?s skyspace, Tending, (Blue) ? and the debut of the Nasher Salon. This casual lounge provides a new opportunity for the culturally inquisitive to learn and engage in discussions about art and its varied forms of expression - culture, fashion, travel, architecture - and how they are all connected in our daily life. In April and May, the Center will also host a Thursday evening Modern and Contemporary Sculpture Lecture featuring guest scholars from around the country.
?We have an outstanding blend of activities for anyone interested in trying something new and different in Dallas,? said Dr. Steven Nash, Director of the Nasher Sculpture Center. ?We will host a robust schedule of family and cultural events in the heart of the Dallas Arts District and we welcome everyone to come join the celebration.?
