FORMER NASHER SCULPTURE CENTER DIRECTOR STEVEN A. NASH APPOINTED TO BOARD OF TRUSTEES

Dallas, Texas - The Nasher Sculpture Center announced today the appointment of Dr. Steven A. Nash to the Center’s Board of Trustees, effective immediately. Dr. Nash, Executive Director of the Palm Springs Art Museum in California, was instrumental in the planning and development of the Nasher Sculpture Center and became its first Director from 2001 – 2007. The Board of Trustees acts as a governing board of the Nasher Sculpture Center to oversee the policies and direction of the Center including the current search for the new director.

In making this appointment, David Haemisegger, President of the Board of Trustees, commented: “Dr. Nash has been intimately involved with the Nasher Collection since the early 1980’s as a consultant and advisor to the family, and as the Center’s first Director. His direct involvement in the governance of the Nasher Sculpture Center will prove invaluable. “

Steve Stamas, Chairman of the Board of Trustees, added: “We are honored to welcome back Dr. Nash to the Nasher Sculpture Center in this new capacity. His scholarly achievements and extensive experience in the art world certainly make him an ideal addition to the Board.”

As Director of the Nasher Sculpture Center, Dr. Nash played a key role in the planning of the Center's building and sculpture garden. He was also responsible for the planning, staffing and operation of the Center. Dr. Nash has organized more than 30 major exhibitions and has authored numerous scholarly publications. At the Nasher Sculpture Center these have included The Women of Giacometti, David Smith: Drawing and Sculpting, and Matisse: Painter as Sculptor. Other noteworthy exhibitions organized by Dr. Nash include: A Century of Modern Sculpture: The Patsy and Raymond Nasher Collection, Picasso and the War: 1937 – 1945, Naum Gabo: Sixty Years of Constructivism, Pierre Bonnard: The Late Paintings, Wayne Thiebaud: A Paintings Retrospective, and Alain Kirili: A Dialogue with Rodin.

Dr. Nash is a graduate of Dartmouth College and Stanford University where he received his PhD in Art History. Prior to his tenure at the Nasher Sculpture Center, Dr. Nash was the Associate Director of The Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco and the Deputy Director and Chief Curator of the Dallas Museum of Art. Dr. Nash is currently the Executive Director of the Palm Springs Art Museum in California, a position he has held since March 2007.

Ms. Nancy Nasher Haemisegger, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Nasher, real estate attorney, and President of NorthPark Development Company.

Mr. John G. Heimann, Senior Advisor to the Financial Stability Institute of the Bank for International Settlements and retired Senior Executive with Merrill Lynch & Company, where he was Chairman of the Financial Institutions Group and a member of the firm’s Executive Management Committee.

Dr. William Jordan, former Director of the Meadows Museum at Southern Methodist University and Deputy Director of the Kimbell Art Museum, Fort Worth, and former President of the Chinati Foundation in Marfa, Texas.

Mr. Jim Lehrer, nationally respected author, print and television journalist, and Executive Editor and Anchor of PBS’s “Newshour with Jim Lehrer.”

Ms. Andrea Nasher, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Nasher, a graduate of Stanford University, art collector, producer of documentaries, and a co-producer of the revival of the Broadway show “Damn Yankees.”

About the Nasher Sculpture Center:
Open since October 2003, the Nasher Sculpture Center is dedicated to the display and study of modern and contemporary sculpture. The Center is located on a 2.4 acre site adjacent to the Dallas Museum of Art in the heart of the Dallas Arts District. Renzo Piano, a world-renowned architect and winner of the prestigious Pritzker Prize in 1998, is the architect of the Center’s 55,000 square foot building. Piano worked in collaboration with landscape architect Peter Walker on the design of the two-acre sculpture garden.

The Nasher Sculpture Center was the longtime dream of the late Raymond and Patsy Nasher, who together formed one of the finest collections of modern and contemporary sculpture in the world. The Raymond and Patsy Nasher Collection includes masterpieces by Calder, de Kooning, di Suvero, Giacometti, Hepworth, Kelly, Matisse, Miró, Moore, Picasso, Rodin, and Serra, among others.

The Nasher Sculpture Center presents rotating exhibitions of works from the Nasher Collection as well as special exhibitions drawn from other museums and private collections. In addition to the garden and indoor gallery space, the Center contains an auditorium, education and research facilities, a café, and a store.

The Nasher Sculpture Center is open Tuesday through Sunday from 11am to 5 pm and Thursday from 11am to 9 pm.
