DR. STEVEN NASH TO LEAVE NASHER SCULPTURE CENTER TO ASSUME DIRECTORSHIP OF THE PALM SPRINGS ART MUSEUM

Mr. Raymond Nasher, Founding Chairman of the Nasher Sculpture Center, announced today that Dr. Steven A. Nash, Director of the Center, will be leaving Dallas in early March to assume the position of Executive Director of the Palm Springs Art Museum in California.

Mr. Nasher commented on his long standing relationship with Dr. Nash, “Steve has been a valued colleague and advisor of mine and my late wife Patsy since the early 1980’s. He was intimately involved in the early planning and development of the Nasher Sculpture Center and became its first Director in 2001. After such a long and fruitful relationship, I am sorry to see Steve leave and wish him much deserved success. The people of Palm Springs are truly fortunate to have Steve Nash as the Director of their Museum.”

Dr. Nash has organized more than 30 major exhibitions and has authored numerous scholarly publications. At the Nasher Sculpture Center these have included The Women of Giacometti, David Smith: Drawing and Sculpting, and Matisse: Painter as Sculptor. Other noteworthy exhibitions organized by Dr. Nash include: A Century of Modern Sculpture: The Patsy and Raymond Nasher Collection, Picasso and the War: 1937 – 1945, Naum Gabo: Sixty Years of Constructivism, Pierre Bonnard: The Late Paintings, Wayne Thiebaud: A Paintings Retrospective, and Alain Kirili: A Dialogue with Rodin. Prior to his tenure at the Nasher Sculpture Center, Dr. Nash was the Associate Director of The Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco and the Deputy Director and Chief Curator of the Dallas Museum of Art.

Dr. Nash note, “I have found my lifelong collaboration with Ray to be incredibly rewarding and want to thank him for being such a great patron and partner. His vision and commitment have made remarkable contributions to the people of Dallas and beyond. In my new position I look forward to creating ways for us to work together.”

Mr. Nasher added, “The Board of the Nasher Sculpture Center is beginning the process of finding a new director. I am confident that we will find someone who will be as devoted as Steve has been to making the Nasher Sculpture Center a continuing and vibrant part of the cultural life of North Texas.”

About the Nasher Sculpture Center:
Open since October 2003, the Nasher Sculpture Center is dedicated to the display and study of modern and contemporary sculpture. The Center is located on a 2.4 acre site adjacent to the Dallas Museum of Art in the heart of the Dallas Arts District. Renzo Piano, a world-renowned architect and winner of the prestigious Pritzker Prize in 1998, is the architect of the Center’s 55,000 square foot building. Piano worked in collaboration with landscape architect Peter Walker on the design of the two-acre sculpture garden.

The Nasher Sculpture Center is a longtime dream of Raymond Nasher and his late wife, Patsy, who together formed one of the finest collections of modern and contemporary sculpture in the world. The Raymond and Patsy Nasher Collection includes masterpieces by Calder, de Kooning, di Suvero, Giacometti, Hepworth, Kelly, Matisse, Miro, Moore, Picasso, Rodin, and Serra, among others, and continues to grow and evolve.

The Nasher Sculpture Center presents rotating exhibitions of works from the Nasher Collection as well as special exhibitions drawn from other museums and private collections. In addition to indoor gallery space, the Center contains an auditorium, education and research facilities, a café, and a store. The Nasher Sculpture Center is open Tuesday through Sunday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. and on Thursday from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Admission is $10 for adults, $7 for seniors, $5 for students, and free for members and children under 12.
